PUPPY CARE

VACCINATIONS

The basic 3 in 1 vaccine covers Distemper, Hepatitis and Parvo virus. All of these have the potential to kill dogs. Parvo virus (causing a severe bleeding gastroenteritis) occurs all over the Central Coast. The virus is tough and can stay in the soil for years, and can be brought home by you on your shoes.
Protection can be given against kennel cough. Most boarding kennels require a vaccination against kennel cough before dogs can board.

Full vaccination protection -
6-8 weeks: 1st vaccination
12-14 weeks: 1st booster
16-18 weeks: 2nd booster
then annual boosters

WORMING

Puppies can get intestinal worms from their mother as well as fleas. Pups should be wormed every 2 weeks until they are 12 weeks of age, then monthly till 6 months, then every 3 months after that.
Available in choc-drops, tablets and chewies.

HEARTWORM

Heart worms, unlike other worms, are spread by mosquitos. A very debilitating disease which can fill the heart with worms clogging blood flow and causing heart failure. Either a daily or monthly heartworm tablet will keep your pup safe. Discuss with your vet which brand is best for your puppy.

DESEXING

For non breeding dogs, desexing is recommended for a number of reasons and is usually carried out at 6 months of age.

  • It markedly reduces the bitch’s or dog’s wandering urge, minimising the chance for accidents or loss.
  • Entire dogs have a much higher chance of developing prostate problems/tumors.
  • Unbred bitches are at more risk of developing an infected uterus
  • Desexing bitches minimises breast cancer and removes the chance of uterine and ovarian cancer
  • Stops unwanted puppies
