MicrochippingWhat is a Microchip?A microchip is a tiny information chip which is about the size of a grain of rice. When read by a special scanner it has a unique number (similar to bar codes at the supermarket). That number is linked to your pets details on a central registry that allows a vet or council worker to contact you if your pet has strayed. This is especially useful if your pet arrives at a vet having been injured. How is it implanted?Implantation is a very minor and painless procedure, which involves your vet inserting the chip under the skin between the shoulder blades. This is done via a hypodermic needle, similar to a regular vaccination Do I have to?As of September the 1st, 2001, microchipping is compulsory for all cats and dogs in NSW. It against the law to own an animal that is not microchipped. If your pet arrives at a council facility and is not microchipped there may be a considerable fine. Do I still have to register my pet?Yes, your animal must still be registered with your local council, but instead of paying an annual fee, your registration is for the pet's lifetime and is linked to the microchip. Please check with your local council for the cost of registration. |
